I'm leading two Bible studies, one on the parables of Jesus, and another on the letter to the Ephesians. God does not mince words in reminding us of our need for Him, and what He has done to fill that need. If the Council did not possess the authority to adjudicate such questions, who does? If the Council Fathers did not intend to be the arbiters, why do they say that they do?
